Currie & Pam’s Story

Site created on September 27, 2020

We are blessed to have so many friends and family who love us and have concern for our well being that Currie and I have chosen to keep you all informed, through this site,  of our progress as together we maneuver through Currie's upcoming Bone Marrow Transplant.

Journal entry by Currie & Pam Batchelor

We have experienced a true Christmas miracle. We got the results from Currie’s bone marrow biopsy Tuesday and learned that he is in remission. For this beautiful moment there are no visible myeloma cells in his body. Praise the Lord!  We know that this is because of the amazing transplant team at Chapel Hill Cancer Center and all of the prayers,  loving kindness and generosity that has been bestowed upon us. So many of you have shared your story of never-ending prayers, how you put Currie on your prayer list at church, how you have dedicated your yoga practices to us and lifted us up higher than the clouds. We have received numerous meals, an abundance of cards, interesting gift baskets that make us smile and so many phone calls it is hard to keep track of them all. All of this has brought to us the support, comfort and faith that we needed to survive this ordeal. We truly did not know how very much we are loved nor by this many people. God has truly blessed us and opened our eyes to the wonder of his love that came from so many of you. May we never forget who you are. 🙏🏻❤️
As I have mentioned before, this cancer is incurable. So, even though we can’t see those worrisome myeloma cells, they are still there in some traceable amount. We will get those results after they are examined more closely. Therefore, Currie still plans to participate in the clinical trial in Chapel if he is accepted. He will be on low dose chemotherapy for the rest of his life. This trial will determine if there is a safer more affective drug that will maintain remission for a longer period of time. As we have said before, there is 100% chance the cancer will come back but we are hoping for several years of normalcy before that happens.  Now to decide how to spend the rest of our years honoring this gift of a second chance. We are still letting that decision simmer. Right now I feel that the COVID is having a huge impact on any decisions that we can make. So we practice patience and gratitude and look forward to holidays.
We will spend the holidays at home and visit with our immediate family for Christmas Eve in our beautiful backyard, outside around the fire pit. I have made our traditional Italian sausage for scrumptious sausage sandwiches smothered in hot peppers.  We hope that you have a joyous Christmas and feel how very much you are loved. 🎄
Merry Christmas and Happy New year,
Currie & Pam
PS. I got to wear angel wings for our live nativity scene at Camp United Methodist Church.
