Cooper’s Story

Site created on June 2, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Cooper will begin the process for an stem cell transplant at MD Anderson hospital in Houston, Texas on June 3rd. This process will be difficult for Cooper and will involve extended periods in the hospital where he will be in isolation with Pete (his dad). When he comes out of the hospital, we will all reside in Houston while Cooper’s body begins to accept his stem cells. While this process is a nerve-racking one and even more so in the age of COVID-19, we are looking forward to moving on in his battle with Multiple Myeloma and hope this gives us many years of respite from the disease. Pete, Leisa and myself will be updating this website so all of Cooper’s supporters can stay abreast of his progress and follow along as he kicks cancers a**.
Xoxo, Gretchen

Journal entry by Peter Cram

Cooper got the ok yesterday from his stem cell doctor to go back to SC. He was given a going away present of a shot to boost his white blood cell count for the trip home. We also learned that two of the three of his doctor’s patients getting stem cell transplants contracted Covid from a nurse while having the treatment. Cooper, fortunately, was the one not to get Covid. Apparently both patients survived but one was in the ICU for ten days.

Cooper is feeling better everyday but some of the effects of the chemo drugs will probably stay with him for another month or so. The doctor said that when his hair starts to grow again will be an indicator that the drug’s effects have worn off.

We will be leaving on the drive back to SC later this afternoon. All of us are looking forward to going home!
