Colette’s Story

Site created on May 11, 2018

Welcome to my CaringBridge website.  I was diagnosed with early stage Breast Cancer in March 2018. On June 6th (what I am calling my D-Day) I will be having a mastectomy and reconstruction.

I know we are meant to go through life in community.  God has blessed me through this battle with a great village of support. So I know I do not or could not do this alone.

So I am using this site it to keep family and friends updated on my progress, needs and asks all in one place. I  appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Colette Releford

They were the words I never wanted or expected to hear "you have cancer". But on 3/24/18 what started as a relaxing Saturday became anything but relaxing.

So on this Saturday as I prepare for my third and hopefully last cancer surgery this coming week on 3/27 I come full circle on a year that was anything but relaxing. Most important though is I am still here not just living but thriving.

Today I am spending the day on last minute errands, cleaning, and food prep before surgery. In other words, gearing up to keep fighting. Not my favorite way to spend a beautiful spring day but it beats some of the days I have had this past year.

Tomorrow after church I will spend some time looking back and ahead. I know in this fight I have not fought alone and I'm still so humbled by the support I have had.

I am grateful for the people in those first few days and hours gave me advice, gave me hope, prayed for me and gave me a chance to be my worst in so many ways. I am grateful for the people who sacrificed their time and gave me rides, brought me meals, stayed with me, helped around my house and called or texted to just check in almost daily.

I am grateful how this experience has made my faith stronger, and my vision of who I can and want to be clearer.  I am grateful for lessons learned such as be flexible, it's okay to ask and need help and listen to your Dr's and body but also have a voice in your own care.

So year 1 as a survivor is in the books. Here's to 49 more. Be blessed I know I am.
