Journal entry by Daniel Colon

Hello to anyone who reads this,

I am a disabled retired vet who was medically retired from the military even though I really did not want to go because I loved it so much. I loved the military brothers and sister I met when I was in and never wanted to lose it. Now that I have been out I have nothing to do and feel alone even though I have a wife and kids that I love to death. I have greenhouses that I acquired from a grant, which I am grateful for but I would like to pass on the blessings from that gift to others. I took 2 years of sustainable agriculture classes and have met with the Independent Living organization that has kids in need. I discussed with them ways to help and a way that I could do that is to teach them about growing plants. I am so excited about it and it would also help my own need for socializing and interaction.

- My goal is to teach our younger youth and their parents the importance of organic growing and growing their own food.
- The future goal is to have animals so kids can feed and take care and learn how important they are to our environment.
- Independent Living center's goal is to get a sponsor and turn my barn into a kitchen, where kids can learn how to can foods and cook foods, which I will be teaching this class to.

                                                      Farm Needs

- My well-hose broke and I am in need of a new one to water the plants and eventually use the high tunnels to teach the kids. The cost to repair the hose for the well is $1,300 through K & B Water Well and Drilling. If I don't have the water from that well then I have to cancel the plans for classes.

- Another thing that I wanted to do for the kids (but is not necessary) is to provide shirts for the kids so they can feel more involved and imagine that they there are going to work on their own farm. This is not a need, but a wish list item for them.

Thank you all for reading this. I am not trying to profit with donations I just want it to go to the farm and for kids to learn about growing vegetables and farming. I am providing the seeds,  the growing environment for them, along with the knowledge I gained from school when I was taking Agricultural classes. I just can't afford the rest because I do not go to work but go to school. If I had the money then this would not be a problem and I would do this for them. I know when I start teaching I might have kids that are like me who have suffered a traumatic experience. I would like to do something meaningful to help them cope with this or provide a distraction because I understand how they feel and how important it is to socialize and be out doing something instead of isolating themselves into rooms.
