Journal entry by Samantha Hicks

Friday, February 28, 2020 was a very long day. We started at 8am with The ENT surgeon. She explained how she would be entering his sinus cavity then how she will assist Dr. Kim during surgery. She then explained to us in great detail how his recovery would go. He also agreed to be in a smell study. Which he had scratch and sniff 40 different smells to get a baseline then he will have to do this again 2 more times. The entire time he was scratching and sniffing I kept waiting for him to get a skunk one. It didn’t happen 😳

The second appointment was with the CPAP (Center for Preoperative Assessment and Planning) this is where they did blood work, checks his A1c, did an EKG and gave him all his Pre-operation information. When to stop certain medications, start washing with the special soap and putting the medication in his nose. It was a lot to take in at this appointment. I was glad they gave us all this information in a packet.

Chris third appointment was in the infusion center. This one took an hour. This is where they administered a cortisol test. They did a blood draw every 30 minutes for an hour. It was kind of nice to just put in our headphones and listen to music for a little while. By the time this appointment was over we were running an hour and a half behind.

Fourth appointment was a CT scan. The longest part of this appointment was getting registered. Once we got through that it only took 15 minutes or so to complete this one

Fifth appointment was an MRI with contrast. By this time we were getting exhausted and hungry. We new this last appointment would take another hour. Chris calls my backpack the Mary Poppins bag. I pulled out goldfish crackers, gummy bears and mini snickers to get us through this last stretch. He had a little snack before getting to take a short nap during the MRI. I had service so I was able to watch station 19 while he was gone. Worked out perfect. He finished up right as my show did.

When he was all done it’s was close to 4pm and we were both so ready to go.  By this time we had been at Barnes-Jewish Hospital since 7:30.

Next up is the big day. March 12th we have to be at the hospital at 5am to check in for his surgery.
