Charlotte’s Story

Site created on July 9, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Hi - thanks for caring and being you.

This past month we got bad news. Charlotte was diagnosed with breast cancer. It sucks, its' not fair, and this was not supposed to be how our lives were going to go. I'm making this website for a few reasons - 1 So many people have expressed their concern and support - and really do want to be informed. 2. This has been an emotional rollercoaster and it is hard to have the same conversations over and over again. 3. Updating a website is a a lot easier than updating an entire contact list.

Up until now we haven't had a plan so we were trying to keep the circle of people in the know smaller - because well, everyone has a long list of questions and we didn't (and still don't have all the answers).  But now we'll work to keep this site updated with some basic information (less is more). So check back here from time to time.

Right now when folks ask about ways they can help or support us - to be honest - we're not really sure yet. We may need help with dog walks, company during recovery, or even just a positive and loving text from time to time.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Francisco Magana

Cancer Survivor Day

Today was cancer survivor day and it’s been a good day. It’s also far passed time for an update for all of you.

About 3 weeks ago now Charlotte got some surprise last minute news. Her battle against breast cancer was changing phases again.

  • Mastectomy
  • Chemotherapy
  • Radiation  now

The radiation treatments came to an end on May 20th.  It was a week earlier than expected but that’s a good kind of surprise. She got to "ring the bell" while other patients, staff, nurses and all watched.

Since then life has been getting back to something like normal. As much as being off work, worrying about next steps, and trying to avoid a pandemic is normal that is.

So, all that being said - thank you all. Charlotte felt loved, supported, and the number of kindnesses you all showed her, us, is beyond amazing.

From here out the sprint goes into marathon mode.  There will be pils. There will be scans. There will be anxious days waiting on results. There will be good days. There will likely still be bad days. But there will also be memories of all kindness our friends, families, and even complete strangers showed.

So from here on out we’ll do our best to repay that generostiy to other. First, I’ll be riding in Pelotonia this year to raise some money for cancer research at the center that I am so grateful to - The Ohio State University James Cancer Center. From there on we’ll both do our best to repay this kindness daily.
