Chandler’s Story

Site created on June 23, 2019

Chandler's mom was flown to Denver Presbyterian St. Lukes hospital at 2:30 am on Tuesday, June 18 with complications of extreme swelling and high blood pressure. That is when the roller coaster began. Upon arrival, many tests were completed and it was determined that Chandler was not thriving due to some complications with the placenta and possible pre eclampsia. After an ultrasound, the doctor confirmed that Chandler was 26 weeks gestation, but was only 24 weeks in growth due to the Intra uterine Growth Restriction. Bailey's blood pressure was remaining high and more blood and a 24 hour urine test were run. On Wednesday, the family received great news. Bailey's test results showed improvement and the doctor felt that it may not be pre eclampsia. He still felt that Chandler may not be thriving and wanted to run another ultrasound. This ultrasound also showed improvement and he started to change his diagnosis to pregnancy hypertension and talked about the possibility of outpatient care here in Denver.
For preventative measures, he administered Magnesium Sulfate for Bailey's hypertension and for Chandler's neuro development. Steroids were also used to help Chandler's lungs prepare for the outside world.  Wednesday was a great day and we were all celebrating the good news that Chandler would be able to stay put and we would be able to get her to full term...or at least close.
Late Wednesday night, early Thursday morning, things changed. The monitor assessing Chandler's heart rate started to show little variance and too many dips in numbers. The doctors were concerned and came in and did another ultrasound at 2am. At that time they told Bailey and Kyle that they would be lucky to go a week and Bailey would need to remain hospitalized. By 8am, the team of doctors had met and determined that it would be more like 2 days. By 9am we were informed that the Neo natal ICU team would be coming in to explain what things would be like in the delivery room. We were still under the impression that this was just an FYI in case we needed to go in the next couple of days. At 9:45, the anesthesiologist stopped in and started to explain what he would be doing for the procedure. Everyone was quite confused when he said the c section would be occurring shortly.  Other team members started coming in and preparing for the surgery. Kyle was handed surgical clothing and told to get ready. By 10:15, Bailey was wheeled out and headed to the surgery.
At 11:33 am, Chandler Ann Thoman came into this world, stretching and yawning. She was welcomed by her parents, a team of 6 NICU doctors and nurses, and a doctor that was so surprised at her vigor that he smiled and said, "Well, hello there baby!" The NICU team was very pleased with her vigor, color, and the fact that she was working hard to breathe on her own. The doctors and Chandler's mom and dad did a great job preparing her for this early entry into the world. She was ready!
She was taken to the NICU where she was baptized by the local priests and tended to by her daddy, and the team of doctors assigned to her. She showed them how strong she was ...she was working to breathe on her own and did not require the typical amount of oxygen, she sucked on her pacifier and was moving and strong. She continues to amaze her family and medical team.
She is a fighter...she is a warrior....she is loved beyond words...her parents and the Lord will carry her through.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Kyle and Bailey Thoman

For those of you still following on here, it’s been a while! Chandler is growing like a weed, she rolls over, “chats” constantly, and is now 11lbs 7oz and 24” long! She has been doing really well since being home. We have an appointment next month with both our neurosurgeon (just a check up) and the developmental therapists in Denver. So far chandler hasn’t needed any therapies she’s been developing pretty much right on track, but we have some evaluations with the riverton developmental therapists this month as well so we will see what they have to say! I hope this update finds all of you happy and well! Love, the Thoman’s
