Casey was diagnosed with Stage 4 Burkitt lymphoma in October of 2017. He went through chemotherapy and declared to be in remission.

In April of 2019 he felt like his sock was balled up in his shoe while returning from a conference he took his undergraduate students. This progressed to leg pain and after multiple tests was told his cancer has relapsed and given a grim prognosis. The first chemotherapy failed as did the second. The third type was very aggressive including intrathecal chemotherapy. Unfortunately the course was complicated by sepsis and then encephalopathy.

After 30 days in the hospital he was transferred to the ICU in Rochester and has had a miraculous improvement. His PET scans and spinal taps came back negative, and though they could not explain the changes on his MRI he was given the the green light to begin the final push to attempt transplant of donor stem cells.

Though the road is still long and dangerous with a final course of chemotherapy still required that may have devastating effects, he has chosen to continue fighting with everything he has to attempt to beat this horrible disease.
