Cary’s Story

Site created on October 16, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

On Wednesday, October 14th, Cary was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital with injuries sustained from gunshot wounds. Although the injuries were described in local reports as "non-life threatening," he spends day 3 in a medically enduced coma, fighting for his life in the ICU. Friday he had surgery to reconstruct both intestines, which were severely damaged and partially removed. Due to swelling, the surgeon is unable to safely operate on the remaining visceral organs that are severely damaged. The medical staff will continue to evaluate the swelling, and attempt to complete corrective surgery when the risk of complications is reduced. While the incident is under investigation by the Billings PD, an arrest has been made. Details can be found in the attached link.

As many of you know, Cary has been a resident of California and Washington State the majority of his life. I'm sure you're wondering what he's doing in Montana. He came to Montana from Northern California to visit family in May 2018. During his visit, he lost his personal belongings along with his place of residence in the wildfires that destroyed the lives of many.

The Ables family is known for their stubborn, independent nature. We created a GoFundMe page to help aid in travel costs, medical expenses, and anticipated recovery costs. Both pages will be reviewed and updated daily. Please feel free to share any pictures, comments, or sediments. Your thoughts and prayers are much needed and appreciated during this crucial time.

DAY 24:
Cary was released from the hospital last night. He's doing well, although he continues to face challenges in his daily routine. Being the weekend, the medical supply store is closed, so we'll make it work with the supplies that were sent home with him. We have a close family friend who's giving Cary a comfortable, clean place to stay until he gets home to Cali. Living in my parent's house, I am limited to the help and comfort I can provide. Please feel free to leave comments or send messages to me on messenger. We're working on getting a phone for him.
Thank you for everything!!!
