Newest Update

Journal entry by Samantha Haw

Time for a well overdue update! First and foremost, Carter is doing great. Last month he had his 16 month post treatment scans which consisted of a chest CT, MRI, X-ray, and labs. His scans were clear and his blood work looks great. I have probably said this before, but the struggle of scan day does not get any easier. We all feel the weight of it, especially Carter. I feel incredibly blessed to come out of the day with nothing but good news. I spoke with Carter's surgeon a few days after his scans. Dr. Ogilvie is very happy with the way the bone graft has healed. The bones are completely fused together now and the bone growth is looking great. The section of bone that had to be removed was close to Carter's growth plate and Dr. Ogilvie put great care into protecting it during surgery. He is able to see the bone growth and that the hardware continues to move further away from the growth plate as Carter grows. Now that Carter is considered fully healed from that surgery, we can drop the x-rays from his next appointments. The doctor will take a peek at the hardware once a year for the next few years just to make sure nothing has shifted. As for the rest of the scans, those will continue at every 4 months for now.

What else has happened in the past few months? Summer was great but went by way too fast. We were fortunate enough to do some traveling with family and it was amazing. Carter went on a Make-A-Wish trip in June. He spent a week at Camp Woodward in Pennsylvania, which is a sports camp primarily for skateboarding, multisport, BMX, and scooter. Carter has always enjoyed riding his scooter and spending time at the skatepark. He had talked about Woodward for a few years so it will pretty cool that he got the opportunity to go. He really enjoyed it. Make-A-Wish did an amazing job at putting the trip together for him. In July, we took a Mediterranean cruise with the family - grandma, grandpa, and our favorite Californians. It was amazing!

Carter started 7th grade this year, and continues to be busy with sports. He played tackle football and now the hockey season is underway. In fact, we are gearing up for our first tournament this weekend.
The kids were hit hard will illness at the start of the school year. Both boys have missed multiple days already. Luckily, they haven't had anything more than a cold or virus. Hopefully the worst of it is over and we can get a stretch without any sickness!

I think that is all I have for now. Hopefully my next update will come quicker than this one did. Thank you to everyone who continues to check in on Carter!
