Carter’s Story

Site created on February 18, 2024

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

I took Carter to Yale Children’s ER on Thursday, Feb. 8th around 10pm. He was breathing too fast (over 40 breaths per minute) and it just wasn’t good. He had been sick since the end of December with pneumonia. We had tried 3 different antibiotics and he just couldn’t get better.

They did labs, an ultrasound of his abdomen, a chest x-ray, and then an ultrasound of his lungs. There was fluid on his lungs, but they found an enlarged liver and spleen as well as enlarged lymph nodes throughout his chest and abdomen. He was admitted to Yale Children's Hospital.

He had a CT scan of his chest, abdomen, and pelvis on Saturday, Feb. 10th. The results were concerning and a biopsy of an enlarged lymph node was done on Monday, Feb. 12th.

We found out the results on February 15th... Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Right now, we need your prayers, love, and support. Carter has an Amazon Wishlist. We have a MealTrain for dinners. You can also Venmo @Laura-Harbron to help cover hospital parking, Carter's random cravings of Big Y pizza, Wendy's, or Panera Mac n Cheese.

Journal entry by Laura Harbron

Yesterday was a good day. Carter played outside 2x. He played on the swing and then we ventured down to the culdesac for him to ride on his NightHawk. He modeled his new custom jacket from Oliver's Patch Project and played with his new bubble gun from his 1st grade class. THANK YOU to Mrs. P's class + class parents for all the goodies! The bubble gun is LEGIT! He loves it! His caterpillars are growing and will turn into chrysalids soon.

This morning we had planned on visiting the Survivor Tent at The Circle of Care's 5K race. Carter wasn't feeling very energetic this morning and the weather wasn't great, so we stayed home.

This afternoon Carter attended a birthday party for his friend. It was the first time he's been somewhere other than the hospital or Clinic since February. SERIOUSLY. Carter was really excited to go to SkyZone, but the physical activity wore him out in about 5-10 minutes. He sat and rested, got some water, and then jumped more, but it was just too much for his little body to handle 2 days after having chemo.

I'm proud of him for showing up for his friend and trying, but it was heartbreaking to see him close down emotionally when the exhaustion was far too much for him to handle. He turned moody and didn't want to talk to anyone and just wanted to leave and go home.

Friends who were there, I'm sorry Carter was not feeling up to talking or playing. It's just part of this whole cancer thing. He has good days and there's not-so-good days too. It stinks, but we'll get through it. 🧡

Answered Prayers + Positive Things:

  • Carter got out of the house for something other than Clinic or the hospital. This is HUGE!
  • Tonight we have a Zoom meeting with Carter's Wish Granters. He has another idea for his wish that he wants to share.

Prayer Requests:

  • Chemo Round 4 Side Effects
  • Carter's willingness to visit school for little bits throughout the day as the school year winds down.
