Journal entry by Melody Wry —
The last months have flown by as we have cared for Mom. We had planned to keep everyone updated on Mom's progress but got wrapped up in the events of each day and fell short.
Some may not know that Mom had an internal bleed in late December and spent 8 days in the hospital as they got the bleeding under control. She was released to enjoy Christmas at home but never fully felt better. It was while they were running tests during her hospital visit that they discovered the tumour had started to grow again. When we went to see her Oncology team at the beginning of January they could see how unwell she was and sent us to the ER with a letter explaining why Mom needed to be admitted to the hospital. We sat for a while then they got her to a bed in the ER before finally admitted her at 2:00am.
The next day the oncology and palliative teams came and went from her room most of the day and then had a group consultation to decide how to help her. After all of this and consultation again with Mom the decision was made that she will be moving forward with comfort care only, caring for her whole body and well being instead of just attacking the cancer.
We set up a room with a hospital bed in the parlor at their home for when was released and Aunt Jerry moved in to give Mom round the clock care. Michelle and I joined her on February 5 and Michelle was able to spend 3 weeks with us before returning home.
