Journal entry by Carri Byers

Well, this is cool.  Thanks to Alice Anderson for her suggestion to do this.  I'd honestly not thought of making this a journey, but putting all my thoughts and concerns down might help clear my mind.

As I was recovering from a bilateral knee replacement October 2017, I found a lump in my right breast.  I kept telling myself,  "You've had lumps before, it'll go away." But, I think I always knew it wasn't going to go away. I was already in a lot of pain from my knees and just couldn't face the idea of more, so I ignored it for...well,  too long. In February, I went in for a mammogram. They arranged for a biopsy. It came back positive for cancer. Al the indicators were good for a very treatable, slow growing cancer. A month later, when I was able to get into the wonderful Seattle Cancer Care Alliance center, it turned out the small 1.4 cm lump had grown a tail.  I would need another biopsy to determine if that area too was cancerous. It was. Now I had an area of about 4 to 5 cm that would need to be excised. I decided not to take the chance that perhaps more tissue was malignant that perhaps was missed. I opted for a full mastectomy.

Some have encouraged me to have a double mastectomy,  but my surgeon did not recommend that since there is no family history of cancer and the left breast is clear by all accounts.

So,  the date is set for May 17th. Not sure I'm liking having the surgery on that date. Too many bad things associated with that number, but it is what it is.

As I go along, I will add my thoughts to this page. If you are so inclined, prayers are appreciated. If you wish to leave advice or thoughts, please do. I will add anybody who wishes nne to.
