Carol’s Story

Site created on April 23, 2019

Carol’s health challenges began in 2007 when a surgery did not end well. Carol began to recover in 2009/2010 and gradually became stronger. In 2012 our family noticed differences in mom’s behavior, unfortunately Alzheimer’s disease was evident and eventually mom broke her hip, requiring hip surgery and at that point the doctor stated mom needed 24 hour care. Mom spent 4 years in a single family home with up to 5 other residents and was able to maintain her sense of humor and she always smiled.  April 15, 2019, mom had a stroke and while she fought hard to overcome the challenges, she was unable to recover. Mom died on May 20, 2019.  On May 30, 2019, the celebration of mom’s life at Mariners Church, and the final resting place, Pacific View Memorial Park, then a party with food, beverages and a lot of love ended the day.

Journal entry by rhonda davis

Mom died peacefully and calmly at 9:30pm pacific time on Monday May 20. I was holding mom’s hand and looked into her eyes as they were open and told her that I will carry her heart with me and she will always be with me. My dad talked to my mom, and my sweet cousins Brigitte and Danielle were with mom. I am amazed and feel so incredibly grateful to have experienced such beauty and grace as mom’s breathing slowed down and continued to do so until she quietly stopped. I held mom’s hand for an hour as we waited for Walker Family Funeral Services to arrive. My cousins joked that I was going to have to go with mom if I did not unclasp our hands. It was very hard to let go, and I did eventually.
