Carol’s Story

Site created on February 9, 2019

On Tuesday, January 29th, Carol went into urgent care for help with flu-like symptoms. Several tests were done and on February 1st, they were able to make the diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia.

More information about this type of leukemia can be found here: https://www.cancer.gov/types/leukemia/patient/adult-aml-treatment-pdq/

She started chemotherapy almost immediately at the U of M hospital in Minneapolis, where she has been since she received the diagnosis.

As you can imagine this is a very scary and uncertain time for Carol's entire family. Tyler has been trying to get some hours in at work and Carol's siblings and parents have been very helpful taking the kids to and from school and daycare.

They are learning new information daily and after the first round of chemo, more tests will be able to point them to the next right step. At this time Carol and Tyler aren't answering "big questions" because there are still so many uncertainties.

More information about how you can help is coming soon. In the meantime, please keep the entire family in your prayers. This is a good place to leave comments for Carol and Tyler so they can answer back when time and energy allows.

Journal entry by Sarah Klaehn

I was able to visit Carol last week during her last stay in the hospital while receiving chemo. These last 4-1/2 months have been the longest in her life. Several hospital stays, countless tests, and time away from work, family, and friends has taken a toll on her.

Carol has a biopsy in 6 weeks to know how to proceed. All results so far have been promising but there’s always the looming questions: Why did this happen? Will it happen again? How will I know the early warning signs if this comes back?

Right now it’s still a waiting game. Carol plans to go back to work in September. She is looking forward to being needed again. She’s needed to rely on others these past months and she’s ready to be back to a regular life of work and time at home with her family. The regular things we sometimes take for granted.

Please send some encouragement to Carol and her family with kind words, donations or both! Happier times are in their future but the waiting game is no fun!

Waiting is a mystery – a natural sacrament of life – there is a meaning hidden in all the times we have to wait. It must be an important mystery because there is so much waiting in our lives. Everyday is filled with those little moments of waiting.
