Journal entry by Carmela Hipp

I can’t say enough about my village!

Thank you for walking this cancer journey with me. I feel your support and love everyday.

It’s been over a year! Life can really fly by.

Below are my results from my pet scan as best as I can relay.

I saw Dr. Hung 1st. He is the knew radiation doctor at Gettysburg Cancer Center. He has taken over for Dr. Martin, who left to work closer to home. His wife is very pregnant and expecting their first child.  Dr. Hong was wonderful! Took so much time with me, even told me to move closer to see my images and go over each one with me.

Here’s the gist; my right upper lobe of my lung is partially collapsed. There are some areas getting a brighter in the scans over the course of the year and they are possible signs of tumors growing back. Dr. Hung states that 7 out of 10 times it means cancer growth. There is still no definitive results that my tumors are growing back or I still have Pneumonia and or a large/deep infection in the right upper and lower parts of my lungs. This could be caused by partial collapsed lung because of the stale air and other variables could have created a deep infection in my lungs. The side effects from over 25 radiations could also be the cause of the partially collapsed lung. I will send pics of my ct and pet scans, if you would like to see them, just shoot me a *text*. I don’t want to overload anyone.

I will be on steroids for 30days and another antibiotic. I will then go back and get yet another CT scan with contrast and immediately following the ct scan, I will review images with Dr. Hung. I did ask if they had a money tree and I will go pick some money off of it 🤣. You know me, always quick to joke, but add some truth to it!

Dr. Shah’s visit overall went pretty well. I did discuss his lack of responding to my messages and moving forward a better way to communicate. I also have to extend some grace because three of his key people have been out of the office. He’s been running the show by himself. I still expect a level
Of care and I did use my voice, so I do feel heard. I still feel very confident and passionate that if my life will be extended and or cancer remove through God, he will use Dr. Shah. Dr. Shah is extremely intelligent, always learning and reviewing new protocols. We talked about some chemotherapy and immunotherapy options if I don’t want to do radiation because of the permanent right lung collapse that most likely would happen. This is all up in the air, if indeed it is cancer growing back. Dr. Shah ordered a blood test on my marker mutations to see where I am. It’s been since 2019/2020 since I have had them tested and he stated a lot of medicine has come to fruition since then. Dr. Shah does indeed want me to see the pulmonologist. He said that’s there expertise and Dr. Habib will be able to give me a better quality of care for my lungs moving forward. There is a sedation procedure that the pulmonologist would like to do and I will get more info on that. The pulmonologist, Dr. Habib, Dr. Shah, & Dr. Hung will work together to help me with whatever my results are moving forward.

Overall, don’t have definitive answers, however I am going in the right direction.

My tumor markers have increased from 14 in June to 31.5 in August. It’s still right on the line, however that much of an increase could definitely be the sign of cancer growth. I will be doing a biopsy with the pulmonologist at some point.

I am also asking for prayers for my family and I. We have different challenges that we are facing and could use some extra prayers.

I am holding these verses close to my heart daily.
Hope is the anchor for our soul! Hebrew 6:19.
God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and love and self-discipline." 2 Timothy 1:7

Thank you all so very much ♥️!
