Journal entry by Mindy Grantham

Today was an OK day. They gave Carlos an MRI before I even got there this morning and they said that it looked good. I brought him some breakfast since he hated the hospital breakfast the other day. A speech therapist spent some time with him and said that he's doing well for it being less than 24 hours after surgery. His speech isn't as good as it was before the surgery, but they expect it to be worse before it gets better. The physical therapist made him walk around the floor a couple of times because they wanted to make sure that he isn't dizzy - he did really well. The nurse for the neurosurgeon came today and took out the drain in his head too and they took off the bandage. We ate lunch together and then I came home for a couple of hours to get some things done and to let out the dogs. I guess Carlos was vomiting while I was gone. They think it was due to the medicine they gave him to get rid of his hiccups, which keep bothering him. He's been in some pain today, but they're really good at staying on top of it so it doesn't get unbearable. The best news of the day though is that they moved him out of the intensive care unit into a regular room. This is good because it means that he'll be able to get more rest because they only check on him every 4 hours instead of every hour. He also has a bathroom in his room with a shower, which he is excited to use tomorrow. The below photos show Carlos' head now, the CT scan of his brain from this morning, the MRI image of his brain from the top and from the front before the surgery. The white "ball" is the abscess and the white around it is swelling.
