Journal entry by Karen King

Kathy lived a life of adventure. She endeared herself to others not only with her talents and abilities, but also her spontaneous wit and steadfast loyalty and leadership. She was born as a twin on July 18, 1953 in a small town in Arkansas, yet her name has been spoken with love in the Caribbean, Hawaii, Africa and among family and friends across the United States.

As a Christ-follower, Kathy served others with every ounce of her being. In Africa, as a Peace Corp volunteer, she was in charge of grain distribution and successfully opened a bakery for street children to sell bread. On the islands of Hawaii and in the Caribbean, she managed properties and resorts. As an entrepreneur she owned many businesses from packing/shipping, commercial and residential real estate and was a self-taught webmaster. Her only limitation was time to finish all the projects left behind: clay sculpting, soldering, cooking, sewing, cri-cut, poetry, calligraphy, art and drawing. She is well-known for her photography of sunrises over the ocean.

Kathy is survived by her husband Robert, children R.D. & Debbie Spratt, grandsons: R.E. & John Mark of Ormond Beach, Florida; brother and sisters: Sheryl Smith of Booneville, Arkansas; Benny & Linda Smith of Perry, Oklahoma; Jim & Bonnie Bemis of Medina, Minnesota, Robert & Karen King of Norman, Oklahoma and many nieces and nephews who adored her. She is preceded in death by her parents Mr. & Mrs. James W. Smith and her brother James David Smith.

Kathy’s ability to think of others continues. After her diagnosis with ALS, her wish was to donate her body for research to the ALS Research at Mayo Clinic in Jacksonville, Florida. On Friday, December 10 at 2:40 p.m., Kathy stepped into her new body and her new home in heaven with her Savior and Lord Jesus Christ. In one of the last messages that she typed with her eyes, she said: “Not being able to speak has made me realize that the Holy Spirit speaks with a voice that is much more powerful than any human voice. When we get to heaven, when you hear a loud, happy laugh, that will be me. God bless you all.”
