Butch’s Story

Site created on January 1, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

In December of 2018, Butch's shoulder started to bother him.  He attributed it to his flu shot, but it continued to hurt and his arm became very weak as we went into 2019.  In March, he went to an orthopedic doctor in Florida.  They though he might have  a torn rotator cuff.  But, when he had an MRI, it showed that the shoulder had a spot that was "eating the bone".  Not good!

We were able to get into an Orthopedic Oncologist who did a biopsy of the spot on the shoulder.  Butch was diagnosed with prostate cancer that had metastasized to the bone and was referred to a Medical Oncologist,

The treatment plan was to do hormone therapy which would consist of a shot once a month and some medications to remove testosterone which would keep the cancer from continuing to grow.

This seemed to be working.  Butch was feeling better, the shoulder healed and we had a great summer,,,able to go to the Florida condo and enjoy family and friends!!  And a few happy hours!

Fast forward to October/November...Butch began to complain about pain in his hip and leg and the pain became so bad that he couldn't hardly walk.  At that time, his oncologist referred him to start radiation immediately.

Since then, its been pretty much of a blur.  He has been at Union Hospital, home for a day, back to Union, home for a few days, back to Union, released to Springhill Village and then back to Union on Christmas Day.

His cancer has metastasized to the bone and to the liver.  He did one chemo treatment, but it did more harm than good...not strong enough to take it.  He's been up and down and all around...but is a fighter and with the support of friends, family and incredible nurses/caretakers has a good attitude and taking it all one day at a time.

As of January 3, 2020, he is at Union Hospital and is hoping to be released to Springhill Village tomorrow for rehab.

All of us have appreciated the shoulders to lean on, advice, calls, visits, texts, food, and the laughs between some tears.    We are incredibly blessed with so much love and prayers surrounding us.  Miracles do happen and we are hoping for one!

Love you all!
