Journal entry by Brittani Fleury

Hey there- happy Sunday!

I’ve primarily used this platform to share my journey and what I’ve been going through during my diagnosis but today I’d like to use it for something else. Still related, but I often wonder how I could possibly express my gratitude for all the outreach and support along the way. It’s been so beautiful, so I thought today I’d share some of the ways the support has impacted my life:

-I was able to purchase a cold cap during chemo, which was not covered at all by insurance. This allowed me to keep my hair through treatment which I’m eternally grateful for

-Financial assistance with medical bills and prescriptions- I didn’t have to stress about making my deductible payments or the constant copays that are flooding my account. I’ve spent thousands out of pocket for medications/copays.

-Food on my table- it’s been very challenging to find the motivation or energy to cook. So many wonderful humans have stepped in to provide me with delicious, nutritious food to fill my plate or have donated gift cards/meal services so I could avoid cooking. One less thing to think about, and so appreciated.

-Emotional Outreach- it is absolutely mind blowing to me just how many people care. It’s been eye opening and I’m so thankful to have so many wonderful people in my life.

-Rent/Utilities- I’m so fortunate to have a great housing situation (and a great landlord!) but a couple months after diagnosis my roommate moved out and all my bills doubled over night. We had planned for this, but not at the same time as a cancer diagnosis. Not having to worry about making rent/bills has been a HUGE relief. At the beginning this caused me a lot of anxiety.

-My last hoorah with a full bra- I had never been on a tropical vacation in my adult life, and for the last time, I was able to enjoy myself with ‘my girls’ out and have a truly great time. My body looks so different now, I couldn’t wear most of the things I wore on that trip today. I’m so thankful to have those pictures and memories to look back on.

-Maisey- though I have yet to take anyone up on this (partly because I’m obsessed with my dog and want her around all the time), many folks have offered to walk or watch her if needed. Thank you.

-Company/Rides- there is a select group of humans that have really shown up for me in a physical sense, by giving me rides, visiting, or sitting through chemo treatments with me. There were times when more than one person would help in a day. I had 16 chemo treatments and I never sat alone once. I had a waiting list of people who wanted to sit with me (can you believe?!). They would bring snacks or other distractions, but would mostly keep me company through conversation. It made the time pass so much faster.

-Work- my company has just been incredible… beyond my expectations. I loved this company before cancer but gosh, the way they’ve shown up for me during this has been nothing but astounding. I feel so fortunate to be part of such an awesome team and I truly love them like family.

-Cleaning- many folks have offered to come over and clean for me but unfortunately this is one of my weird things and I just can’t let other people clean my house. 🤣 but the thought is appreciated.

Everyone- I’m just super grateful. And I wish there was a better way for me to express my gratitude- but I just want you all to know how much you’ve impacted my life and my cancer experience. I am so fortunate, thank you.
