"Smell the roses" That was the final post Brian left for all of us on his Facebook page. This was so typical Brian, aways thinking of others first. He lived his life to the fullest and he definitely followed his own advice to "Smell the roses." And not only does he tell us to smell the roses, he gives us ways to do it. Again, so typical Brian. Whether it was a trip to the grocery store or a multi-week trip to the National Parks, he approached each project by carefully studying and planning. I had the fortune to accompany Brian on the hike up Mount Chirripo in Costa Rica, 3,820 meters (12,532 ft) summit on Feb 16, 2016 at 9:08 am. Mount Chirripo is the tallest peak in Costa Rica. Brian had carefully planned the hike starting at least a year before training and arranging every detail, weighing his equipment to the ounce. On previous hikes Brian had told me that he did not like to hike in the rain nor was he comfortable with heights, but those were just small obstacles not problems. Of course as it turned out the early morning we set out for the hike up Chirripo it was raining...well almost pouring and let's not forget the fog. I should also mention that Brian had picked up a stomach bug at the base camp the night before we were to hike to the summit so he was not feeling the greatest at 5:30 am when we headed up to mountain. When we got near the summit, the last 30 feet was a steep hand over hand climb on wet slippery rocks but Brian pressed on. When he got to the top he signed the log book with the message dedicating the hike "For my brothers, my wife, my mom, my dad, my family." That was the way Brian was, make a plan, execute, always thinking of others. Brian and I did several more hikes some of which involved rain, a few with lots of rain, and climbing heights. He didn't really like the rain or the heights, but as approached every thing in his life, plan and work through it. It was such an honor to know him. I know heaven will be a much better place for everyone with him there. He already told us his plans for when he got to heaven. I would not say "Rest In Peace" as I know Brian is in heaven probably planning out some project but definitely not resting, but he is at peace. Susan and I and the Pennett family will miss you. God Bless.

Before commenting, I felt I had to spend the last few days reflecting on the amazing Journal Entry by Erin. Brian should be very grateful and very proud of you. Brian was a recruit that I hosted. We were on the wrestling team together for only one year before I graduated. Even so, there was a special connection despite no contact for decades. That changed when he took a detour to visit me in Wisconsin on his tour of national parks. Re-connecting then and after that only reinforced to me what a special person Brian was. He was a deserving recipient of many of my prayers for him as he dealt with his health challenges with remarkable courage and recognition of reality. While I enjoyed knowing Brian in college, I feel much more blessed to have known him recently. God bless Brian and all of you.

There are people, and then there are truly special people. Brian was extraordinary. I can honestly say that I never saw him angry. In fact, I never saw him when he was not smiling, excited and embarking on some adventure. He was and remains a great inspiration. He’s one of those people who truly made the world a better place and serves as a model for the rest of us. He will be greatly missed, but his inspiration lives on with countless others. I feel so blessed to have had a chance to get to know him.

We thought we were blessed with knowing Brian reasonably well, but this beautifully crafted obituary was a much-appreciated deep dive into his character and accomplishments, many of which had escaped us until now. Brian will be missed by so many and he leaves a fantastic legacy to his family. We knew Brian through his associating with Trinity Ecumenical Parish where he was always a refreshing reflection of the Lord's finest work. Rest in Peace, walk Heaven's equivalent of the AT, and bless us all with your continuing presence in whatever form you choose.

We met Brian in 2001-2002 - professionally, first as a business competitor, then as a business partner, but over time, as a true friend and Christian brother . Anything he did, he did to the fullest. Brian, you will be missed!
