Brandy’s Story

Site created on January 1, 2019

In early December 2018, just days after turning 34, I was diagnosed with Stage 1B invasive lobular carcinoma.  I had a bilateral mastectomy with reconstruction on January 9, 2019.  From March 1 to July 19, I completed 16 rounds of AC-T chemotherapy.  I completed 35 sessions of radiation, from August 13 to October 1.  My intention for this page is to share updates about my physical, mental, and emotional health and some of my thoughts as I navigate this unexpected experience.

The verdict is in: I'll be having surgery again tomorrow (Tuesday, October 5).  My left breast is swollen more than expected and is very bruised; it would seem there is a hematoma that needs to be evacuated.  Essentially, this means there was unexpected bleeding, under the skin, and it has caused the swelling and bruising.  For me, there is also a small, hard area of tissue, which isn't good.

My body could reabsorb the blood and work things out on its own, but this could take months.  My plastic surgeon said it could actually take about six months for the swelling and bruising to resolve.  If it was only aesthetic, I might be willing to deal with it, but the swelling itself is causing a strain, getting more uncomfortable by the day.  Having surgery to remove the implant, clear out the area, and re-insert the implant will alleviate the swelling as well as the pain and discomfort.  Not to mention that I should heal faster than I would if I did nothing.

Fortunately, it will be a short surgery (around 45 minutes).  I'm in good spirits and feeling okay, aside from the swelling discomfort.  Mostly, I'm annoyed by the inconvenience of needing another surgery.  Really puts a wrinkle in my week, as I'll need to reschedule work meetings to take a few more days off.  What a hassle!

One of these days, I'll catch a break.
