Brad’s Story

Site created on January 26, 2020

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place.

On Monday, January 20, Brad received an urgent call from his primary care doctor at work. He requested that Brad meet with him as soon as he was done seeing patients (Brad is a pediatric dentist).

When Brad met with the doctor, he was told the results of two different MRI scans showed a mass of “something” surrounding some of his vertebrae and spinal cord. The doctor had already consulted with a neurosurgeon and they were ready to do surgery that day. Brad felt a very strong impression NOT to allow surgery that day, which he found out later was a huge blessing.

The past week has been full of CT scans, lab tests, meetings with a neurosurgeon and oncologist, and lots and lots of prayer. On Wednesday, Brad was told he has a tumor of considerable size, lymphoma of the spine, surrounding vertebrae and spinal cord. The doctors have wasted no time and scheduled the first chemotherapy treatment on his daughter’s 16th birthday which is tomorrow.

The prognosis for this type of cancer is extremely GOOD! Doctors assure us that “if you are going to get cancer, this is the kind to get!” It is VERY responsive to chemotherapy, even more so than surgery in this case, which is why we are so grateful Brad listened to that strong impression!! They tell us the side effects from the chemotherapy are usually minimal, and Brad is planning on continuing to see his pediatric dental patients. He will be making every day “hat day” to help the kids see that Dr. Barlow is the same fun guy he has always been, he has just gone bald and will be wearing his surgical mask ALL the time for the next few months!

Words cannot express how grateful we are for the outpouring of prayers in our behalf. We see God’s hand even in this illness and are grateful He is mindful of us.

We appreciate your support, prayers and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Journal entry by Kalynne Barlow

A friend of ours died unexpectedly this last weekend. You just never know what is going to happen.

Brad was diagnosed five-plus months ago with cancer. Other than a consistent pain in his back which he attributed to his profession, we had no idea what was in store for us.

Brad’s hair is growing back, and as far as we can tell so far, it will not be dark brown anymore but a very distinguished gray. Who would have known?

Brad asked his family recently what would be the one thing we have learned over the past few months of cancer treatments, pandemic and finding a new normal. Some of our answers:

Appreciate what you have.
Look for the good in people, in every situation.
Be kind.
Be grateful.
Pray.
God is listening and watching over us.

Brad has two more radiation treatments. Two more days. The state of the world right now make us want to hide when we should be celebrating! People we meet at work, at the grocery stores and restaurants are scared, unhappy and even mean. It’s hard to think of celebrating when the world is turned upside down. But we have more time together when others do not. We have a job to go to when others do not. We have loving family and friends who pray for and watch out for us when others do not. We are blessed.

Brad has more scans, checkups, lab tests and follow-up visits planned for the next few months, repeating over the next 2-5-10 years. During that time we will be hoping cancer doesn’t return. If it does, I hope we will be able to recognize the tender mercies and blessings that have come to us.

We are grateful for your love and support. Honestly, I hope we don’t ever have to write in this blog again! But if we do, know that we know that faith in a loving Heavenly Father has seen us through this far, and will continue to do so.

We love you all and thank you for your continued love, prayers and support!

With love,

Brad and Kalynne
