In one moment, life changed for the Nahalea's.

October 17, 2020, Started the day with the normal workday, shopping for the cafe supplies, only this time, my wife, Gloria joined Bill for the ride.  Bill driving on the freeway, suddenly began to experience a stroke, leaving Gloria to navigate the horrific ride of trying to slow down and pull over to take control. To stop, the van had hit objects to slow down and get off the freeway traffic. It was necessary to self crash to stop the car while Bill was going through the stroke.  911 was called, and Bill was transported by the aid car to Tacoma General Hospital.  Bill had a serious stroke which landed him in the ER and immediately placed in an induced coma.  Bill suffered from a brain bleed stroke and damages to his right side of his body, recovery was uncertain.

For the next two weeks, Bill was fighting for his life, a ventilator, tubes attached to medicine which kept Bill alive. With the current COVID social distancing and protocols the hospitals restricted visitation, allowing only one visitor a day.  The health medical team was remarkable, the family, friends, Hawaiian community pouring out prayers, love, support, well wishes helped Bill to move from ER to ICU, to progressive care unit, and finally to an In Patient Rehabilition Hospital for intensive therapy.

Journal entry by Bill Nahalea

Dec 13, 2020

Bill’s life prior to his stroke was a busy one, despite the Covid pandemic, juggling a take out business in one of the most hard hitting food industries, entertainment, basically anything with crowds. Prior to Covid being announced in the news in February, Bill suffered Covid-like symptoms back in December. Effects of ‘long hauler’ affecting his lungs, leaving him difficulty with breathing, he recovered, and then when September fires produced low air quality, his difficulty in breathing affected his health. Then he had his stroke.

One of the silver linings of the stroke & hospitalization was his lungs were treated for pneumonia with antibiotics, & suctioning fluids. It was brought up that he may have had Covid prior to testing awareness in the very early stages. In order to discharge, he had to be medically stable including clear lungs, in order to be admitted into rehab hospital. I wonder how many folks had Covid prior to the actual news breaking Covid exposure?

His journey to recovery from a couple brain bleeds from the stroke did leave Bill with a deficit on his right side of his body, leaving him disabled and requiring the use of a wheelchair. His wide community of family, friends, spiritual prayer warriors have responded with support, prayers, well wishes, & kōkua, and financial help since his wife, Gloria didnʻt leave his bedside and was focused on helping his recovery. She utilized traditional Hawaiian healing arts of lomi lomi massage, music, prayers, speaking positive energy & love. Loving phone calls, FaceTime, music videos from friends, family & well wishes shared with Bill & ukulele music & songs filled his room & felt the love to bring him back to the place he is now.

Back at home with Gloriaʻs full time care including therapies, personal care, blessed with continued prayers & friends assisting, the recovery & care is daunting and very rewarding with the progress Bill is making.
