“Dear Elise and family, I investigated many outbreaks with Bill, and always appreciated his insights and his sense of humor. I share your loss. Patty Griffin”

— Patty Griffin

“Dear Elise and family, My deepest condolences to you and your family. Bill was my mentor in Foodborne epidemiology. He was always willing to provide constructive suggestions to foodborne investigations. I am glad you were able to visit Hawaii.”

— Becky K

“Bill had outsize importance in my life and career. More than anyone, he turned me towards public health and showed me how exciting that life could be. He was a giant and leaves huge shoes for us to fit into. I will remember him and miss him always.”

— Chris Gill

“So many have spoken so eloquently about Bill that I can only second their remarks, especially those of his Yale classmates. I have more fond memories of him than I can count - Sterling Library and steam tunnel escapades, playing rat patrol on the Nebraska plains, seeing Hitchcock classics together, endless hours of Risk when we should have been studying, water balloon catapults (the captain of the Yale lacrosse team is still looking for Bill) and many others. I will miss Bill's sense of humor most of all. It was so uniquely him, mordantly dry and ironic. And it was always followed by that great laugh, which I can hear now just as clearly now as if he were sitting next to me. Our hearts go out to Elise, Bill's family and co- workers.”
