William’s Story

Site created on November 3, 2020

18 August 1961 - 01 May 2021

On October 1st, 2020 Bill was diagnosed with what was thought to be a mild stroke. It impacted his speech and writing. We were able to get our older son Sam a visa on humanitarian grounds to go to help him there. Sam had to complete a two week quarantine. At the end of that quarantine Bill was in the hospital... lesions on his brain were found. He headed home on Thursday, November 12th to Zurich and went straight to the University Hospital Zurich Neurosurgery department. Bill was diagnosed with Stage IV Glioblastoma. On Saturday, May 1st, 2021 Bill died at home surrounded by family and friends. Bill's journey (and that of his family) was with much love and care noted here by his wife Carmen Crenshaw-Hovey.

People have told me that they find it difficult to donate in this way to Aleksander's education fund. Anything donated to the paypal.me/BillHoveyHealing  (http://paypal.me/BillHoveyHealing (http://paypal.me/BillHoveyHealing?fbclid=IwAR0w8R3BlHt4M0SAp3Zaj0Oh8vT7oD60fkiKcdyebtSaZ5RsIU9d4qxl_rw)) I will transfer to the education fund.

As most of you know, apart from his family, the thing which was most important to Bill was his passion for education. His ability to inform, teach, and inspire a lifelong enthusiasm for learning was the gift he so generously shared with us all.

It was very important to Bill to see his two sons launched on their paths in life. He derived great pleasure from the time he was able to share with Sam in China and from knowing that Aleks was engaged in a fantastic program at Georgia Tech. Now that Bill is no longer with us, those of us who benefitted from Bill’s gifts would like to give something back in a way which directly fulfils his wish to see his second son complete university.

This site has been set up for any of you who would like to honour Bill’s wish. The cost of Aleks’ tuition fees, housing, school supplies, living expenses, and flights is considerable, and your contributions will make it possible for him to complete his program. With your support, Aleksander will graduate the confident and self-reliant young man Bill knew his boy could and would become. On behalf of Bill’s family, thank you for your support.

Journal entry by Carmen Crenshaw-Hovey

This morning some of us here in Zurich will remember William Hovey and celebrate his time here with us by going on a historical walking tour of Zurich led by one of his friends who shares Bill's love of the history and streets of Zurich.
For those of you who are unable to join us who are remembering Bill today, I am thinking of you and contemplating "what would Bill do?" today...
eat a PB&J sandwich
watch the Sox play
root for FCZ to beat Basel
go for a dog walk
read
send a text, audio or video message to loved ones
do something with his kids
listen to The Beatles
write in his journal
reach out to nieces, nephews, brothers, sisters, in-laws
sit on a bench and ponder the mysteries of the world
Today on May 1st, if you do something in memory of Bill, I would love to hear about it below.
