Bill’s Story

Site created on September 26, 2021

Welcome to the CaringBridge website for Bill Gurley.   If you are reading this post, you are dear to us and this is where we will keep you informed.  So that all who visit might have the same information, I will give you a synopsis of how we got to this place.

Bill Gurley—husband, father, musical force of nature and friend has bile duct cancer.  Cholangiocarcinoma as it is officially know, is a serious and potentially devastating disease.  In Bill’s case, his tumor is blocking the common bile duct causing symptoms that demanded attention. Not all who have this cancer are as fortunate in that regard.

In sharing his diagnosis with life long friends, we were strongly encouraged  to seek care at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore where the surgery for this condition has been done thousands of times.  We were put in touch with the Chief of Hepato-Pancreato-Biliary Surgery, Dr. Jin He.  An evaluation of Bill’s case was done and we are headed for surgery Monday, October 4th.

As Dr. He put it, this surgery and  recovery with probable chemotherapy is a marathon.  Through it all, we count on and appreciate your support.

We love you all,
Pam, Bill, Macon and  Hunter

Journal entry by Pam Gurley

Hello Friends,  Bill here!  Pam and I met with my surgeon in Baltimore yesterday morning.  He was very happy with my progress and basically “turned me loose”.  He told me to go back to my normal diet and routines.  Perhaps most importantly he convinced us that they would watch me carefully and that chemo was not warranted based on pathology reports.
I have so much to be thankful for.  Support has come in so many forms from so many places.  It has left us speechless at times.
Nothing compares however to the unwavering help that Pam has been to me over the last weeks.  She has risen to this challenge in a way that has been inspiring to me and I think to many others.  I thought many times how different it would have been without her help.  I am a very lucky guy.
I will resume my teaching schedule next week.  Macon is coming home for a couple of days and we will celebrate Pam’s birthday together.  Thanks to all who have sent loving support on this site and elsewhere.  I look forward to seeing you all in person.
Love from the Northern Neck, Bill
