David’s Story

Site created on January 27, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

I am going to start this page up after have a Facebook Page for a long time.  I am not going to re-hash his long journey, but for those of you just joining us, David had a total colectomy (removal of his large intestine) in 2007, a liver transplant in 2018, and is now facing an extremely serious medical issue right now.

David likely has cholangiocarcinoma (the biopsies are dueling with each other.) Cholangiocarcinoma is a cancer of the bile ducts.  In David's case, there is no tumor - just bad cells.  The location is in his OLD bile duct therefore his new liver is still in excellent shape. There is no metastasis visible on CT scans so this is great news.

We met with the surgical oncologist, nurse practitioner, oncology nurse, and dietician.  He will be having the Whipple Surgery on either 2/19 or 2/24 and the surgery will be done with 2 surgeons...His transplant surgeon Dr. Nagai and the surgical oncology specialist Dr. Shah.

I will not be allowed to be with him at the hospital through his surgery.  I will only be allowed to be there on the day of surgery to see him before and after.  I think this is bothering us the most.  This policy COULD change but this is what it is at this point.

Thanks for all of the messages and prayers!  Keep them coming, please!

Journal entry by Rebecca Sowerby

I cannot begin to thank all of our cherished family and friends for the outpouring of love at David's visitation and funeral.  We were overwhelmed with love and caring.  We have always and continue to feel wrapped in love by all of you.

Boy, do we miss him.  I MISS HIM.

I'm going to be honest, every day is getting harder not easier - but I'm told that's to be expected.   The kids are all back to school and I will go back on Monday - which ironically is David's Birthday.  I'm going to just keep putting one foot in front of the other, take it day by day and make sure that I am acknowledging and feeling my grief - yet keep moving forward.  We are all in counseling and will likely begin attending groups at Ele's Place (for the kids) and Gilda's Club (for me).

This will be my last post on this Caring Bridge page.  I'd give anything and everything to have him back but I wouldn't trade a minute knowing our time would be cut short.
