Journal entry by Kellie King —
Mom has been at Flanagan Rehab, where she has received excellent care for just over a year now. She has been suffering from dementia. Recently we noticed a rapid decline, there were a few tests done but nothing significant showed anything other than this was the normal progression of her disease.
Thursday, the 21st, she took a fall that required stitches, so she went to the ER. A CT scan was performed to make sure she didn’t hurt herself more seriously in the fall. It was then that the doctors realized that she has cancer of some kind. She had a clean CT scan on October 29th, so this is very aggressive. There is no way to tell for sure what kind of cancer it is, but regardless, the outcome would be the same.
The next day after talking to Dr Stalter, we decided the next step to take would be to make Mom as comfortable as possible. The order to start hospice care was placed.
I met with the hospice nurse yesterday and I know that mom will get the best care possible from this point forward. Thankfully now that mom is on hospice, we are able to see her and my dad since they share a room. The nursing home has rigorous standards that are being followed & they are doing a great job keeping the residents safe.
