Journal entry by Kapil Singh

If you’ve ever gone out to buy a Kanchipuram silk saree, surely you’d have noticed the salespeople making it a point to talk about the kind of zari that the saree has. As a thumb rule, you’d have noticed that the pricier sarees (fifteen thousand and upwards) would have “pure zari” or “gold zari”, and as the price dips, the areas which are mentioned are “tested zari” and imitation zari threads”.So what is the difference between pure zari, tested zari and imitation zari? It is the material used. The zari, as we all know, refers to the metallic threads which are woven not only to make the border of a Kanchipuram saree but are also used to create design elements on the body of the saree as well. The process of making zari involves wrapping silk thread with a base metal, after which it is electroplated with gold. There are large numbers of jari kasab manufacturer in surat in Gujarat State.

In Gujrat, Surat's zari industry has had much luster. Millions of Indian brides are indebted to Surat because the zari (gold and silver threads) extensively used in the sarees and dress materials they wear come from the city.if you find best jari kasab manufacturer in surat then you should visit "Ganeshjari.com".Surat has a virtual monopoly of zari making (Varanasi claims a small but negligible share of the market). Most of the zari produced in Surat goes to Varanasi and other pockets of Uttar Pradesh, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Andhra Pradesh. In Varanasi, the Surat zari is used in the manufacture of the world famous "Banarasi sarees." It's also used in the "Kanjivaram" sarees produced in south India. But the industry has to change if it is to survive. A recent report by the Anand-based Institute of Rural Management sounded a clarion call for change. Almost closed to other communities (the zari industry is dominated by the Rana community), Surat's zari industry needs to develop new products and markets, improve its dismal working conditions, opt for quality control and standardization, access inputs at lower costs, upgrade technology, provide training to artisans and seek fresh investments. The Rs 125 crore (Rs 1.25 billion) industry consists totally of decentralized units - not a single composite zari unit exists in the city. Almost a dozen process are involved in zari manufacturing and a number of cottage and home-based units work interdependently to make a complete zari. Of the 125,000-150,000 people directly involved in Surat's zari industry, 70 percent are women who operate machines at home.Surtis very fondly boast about the local, khaman, diamond, and textile in Surat, but what they don't know is that the Surat jari kasab thread craft accorded with Geographical Indication (GI) status. Granting of such GI status to the zari craft of Surat, would impede others from replicating the work. This zari craft of Surat district is one of its oldest industries and is very much connected with the price fluctuations in gold and silver, which are used to prepare it.

Somewhere in the race of fashionable clothing, people fail to understand the beauty of zari craft. Zari industry produces both pure or real zari and imitation zari in several units The process involves the procurement of raw materials and different types of processing for the real zari and imitation zari. Surat is already known for the diamond and silk industry, but the lesser known fact is that the shining "Suratzari thread and zari embroidery material" are considered unique in the world due to the geo-climatic conditions of the region, the silver electroplating process, materials used, type of indigenous machinery adopted and the skill of the artisans. According to a survey, Surat has about 500 manufacturing units, in addition to 3,000 small household units involved in the manufacture of three types of zari - the real Zari, imitation Zari, and plastic Zari.
