Bert’s Story

Site created on December 21, 2019

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

About four weeks ago we got the unwelcome confirmation diagnosis of cancer - mantle cell lymphoma to be exact. This came after a month of various tests that were looking for what was causing a significant elevation in my white cell count and an enlarged spleen.  We were referred to Emory Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta for consultation and to make a decision on what direction we would go on treatment. Decisions made, final tests run in preparation, and we are kicking off 2020 with the start of chemo on January 2.  The game plan is simple - fight like hell and whip this cancer's butt!

Cannot say enough about the support of my awesome wife Cathy, our boys Parker & Zach, and both of our families as we start this fight.  Our GMC Family has been incredible and we have been blessed by so many friends and supporters who are helping us get this all important "win!" The many prayers, notes, calls, etc. have been so supportive and comforting - thank you all for you kindness!

The fight starts January 2, and we will keep friends and family updated through this website as best we can, so please feel free to share with anyone who you think might be interested. Thanks again for the support we have received so far and for that which we will receive in the weeks and month ahead!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Cathy williams

Hello gang, been awhile for an update and wanted to catch you all up.  Just celebrated our 26th Anniversary yesterday and enjoyed a wonderful day & dinner together!  Happy to report I am still in remission and feeling good.  The challenge for now is determining the next steps for my treatment process.  Primary issue for now is to get my bone marrow doing it’s job and rebounding back from chemo. My counts remain quite low and we had to cancel the second attempt to harvest stem cells this past week. So for now, trying to give my bone marrow some “boost” with shots twice weekly and some more time to respond.  Pending the ability to harvest, future course of action entails a stem cell transplant and/or maintenance chemotherapy. Hopefully will have some answers and direction in early August. Thank you for support and prayers. God has been so good to us in this challenge and trust he will continue to guide us and our treatment team in the right direction.
