That is an excellent question. Her blood work, collected when her glucose was 48, was normal under normal circumstance -- but not normal for when a child is hypoglycemic; you will understand that better than most of us. A careful review of the results pointed towards non-ketotic Hyperinsulinemic Hypoglycemia and specifically Hyperinsulinemic Lipolytic Suppression; luckily I have friends who can translate things like that! That got us to question a Fatty Acid issue and the diet for kids with those disorders is low fat/high carb. Since such a diet would not hurt a two-year-old (especially in the short run) it seemed worth a try. Genetic testing is likely how answers will be found but the diet is good data and more importantly, it is controlling the blood sugar issue. That matters for two reasons -- first, Berkeley feels better, and second, blood sugar is likely not the only thing impacted in her body when the response is triggered; maintaining her blood sugar could well be preventing other undesired things from happening in that little person.
