Journal

On February 6, 2020 Ben was in a car accident.  He is in Providence's ICU in critical condition with head trauma and brain swelling.  He luckily has no broken bones but needs a completely calm environment with no stimuli.  We will know more 72 hours after the incident so right now the Schneider's need a lot of prayers.  Everyone is welcome to visit the waiting room but please be respectful of Nicki, Leo and Kaya.  You will not be able to see Ben and probably won't see Nicki.  Your love and support is what is buoying us all up and it means the world to the Schneider's.
Show your love and support for Ben.
Make a donation to CaringBridge to keep Ben’s site up and running.

Ben gave us a few scares today, but is maintaining good brain pressures and is being kept unconscious for healing.

We are waiting until Sunday to see how he comes out of this critical period, but we’re told to plan on a month or more for things to stabilize.

Please respect the privacy of the family and do not visit or bring gifts or food without arranging through CaringBridge.

We have one person sitting with Nicki at all times.

Both sets of grandparents are up to help with the kids so everything is covered for the moment. What they need now is your thoughts and prayers.

Ben turned a corner last night. His brain has stopped swelling and he is coming down on some of the medications.  He is still heavily sedated and we will wait to see how today and tonight go.  Thank you so much for the outpouring of well wishes and prayers.

There is some need for meals this week.  We need a few vegan meals that can be frozen to stock Nicki and Ben's freeezer and it would really help to have some meals for Ben's parents who are staying at the Hickel House.  Details are found by clicking on "Ways to Help", find the Mealtrain link and sign up.  Thanks for your generosity.

We are thankful that Ben has made it through the first 72 hours. It has been a pendulum of wildly swinging ups and downs.

Now, though in still in critical condition, Ben is holding steady.  Last night’s emergency surgery has been successful at keeping his brain pressures down.

He has been heavily sedated.  So much so that it will be another week before we can assess his condition.

We have added several more weeks to the meal train sign-up. Thank you for your help.

Please respect the privacy of the family and do not visit or bring gifts or food without arranging through CaringBridge.

There are more options on the meal train.  An update about that from Will to follow.

Nicki and Ben both had a much calmer night.  Ben remains sedated and holding steady in the ICU.  Due to the sedation we won't be able to assess his condition for probably at least a week.

Families remain in town and kids are back at school.  Thank you for all the well wishes, thoughts and prayers.  Pictures of Ben attached to well wishes are welcome.

Please respect the privacy of the families and do not visit or bring gifts/food without arranging through CaringBridge.

Today was thankfully a quiet day with Ben heavily sedated.

THE BEN BOOK - How to Help Ben and His Family

Ben loves stories and storytelling.  His wife Nicki has asked for us to make a BEN BOOK for Ben to know how much he is loved.  She is asking for a picture and a story about you and Ben for when he wakes up.  We are looking for a volunteer to coordinate, edit and print the “BEN BOOK”

Please post your picture and story here under WELL WISHES.  Nicki has been regularly reading all your WELL WISHES.

Get in touch if you have the skills, inclination and time to take on the BEN BOOK project.

OTHER WAYS TO HELP:

  1. Click here to donate to Ben's GoFundMe page They will need our emotional and financial support.  Please donate funds at GoFundMe.
  2. Click here to volunteer to make some meals for Ben's folks who are staying near the Hospital. They do not have dietary restrictions, but are staying in the Hickel House, and have access to a microwave and a small refrigerator.
  3. Click here to volunteer to make some freezer meals for Nicki and Ben to stash in their freezer.  Nicki is vegan, no meat no cheese, but the kids are omnivores.  PLEASE LABEL VEGAN or OMNIVORE.  We need LOTS and LOTS of freezer meals.  Especially if you have space to hold on to them and deliver them later.

Please Remember:

  • Visitors are not allowed in the ICU, and we can't send flowers, balloons, etc.
  • The family has asked that we respect their privacy right now.
Note: GoFundMe and MealTrain donations are preferred. (CaringBridge donations go to fund this webpage, not directly to Ben)

No major changes during the night.  They have taken him off one of the sedation drugs and will be slowly reducing the other, pending complications.  They are watching carefully how his body responds.  They are hoping to have him off the sedation to assess his condition in about a week.

Thank you for all the photos and stories posted on WELL WISHES.  Please include a general date with your story so we can organize them for Ben.

If you are dropping off meals for Ben's parents, they have asked that you put your name and address on a note with the meal.  It would be healing for them to be able to thank you.

PLEASE NO VISITORS AT THE MOMENT.

Nicki has asked for one person at a time to sit with her and we have that covered. Also the ICU is limiting drop offs, so please don’t bring food or other gifts without checking with us.
