Benji’s Story

Site created on October 16, 2021

Benji was seriously injured in a car accident on October 11, 2021 while on his way to football practice. He's got a long road ahead of him, but we are hopeful for a full recovery.  We are using this website to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement, and most of all, your prayers.  Thank you for visiting.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Jan Horton

It's been a couple of months since we posted an update, and we get asked often how Benji is doing (for those that don't see him regularly). The short answer is he is doing AMAZING!

We enjoyed the holidays, and were so thankful to be together and get caught up in the usual holiday festivities with friends and family.  Looking back to our October, we were constantly reminded at how grateful we were to have such a normal Thanksgiving and Christmas.

Since the last post, Benji had a number of follow up doctor appointments, just to check in and make sure he was recovering as expected. All the surgeons and other specialists have been very pleased (and surprised) with his progress. He will be doing some limited occupational therapy for a couple months, but that is all the "official" therapy he should need. On his own, he has continued to work out daily to continue to gain his strength/weight/muscle back. Most days, he goes to school early to lift weights with his football teammates, and then has track practice after school. He works hard and it shows!

He has not had any problems jumping back into school and keeping up with his work load at school--which is a lot for a junior in high school getting ready for college.  All in all, if you saw Benji on the street and talked to him, you would probably never know he was in such a horrible accident in October.   What a blessing!

As we have said in prior posts, saying thank you to everyone feels so inadequate to express how much we appreciate everyone's love and support through all of this. People near and far, people we don't even know, prayed for Benji and our family. And I can tell you--we felt them and they worked!

And now for a word from Benji: Hey guys. Not much for me to say that hasn't already been said - I'm doing way better than I should be and couldn't thank God enough for His continued blessings. School is going great, although I'm still pretty sure the part of my brain that retains all the Spanish I've learned was lost in the crash. I'm also lifting again, getting super yoked and training for next football season and the current track season, which I am beyond blessed to be able to participate in. I am super grateful for this community and all of the people around me, especially my family, as everyone's encouragement really helped me through this. Sorry for the scare though, and I'll try not to get into this situation again if I can. Have a good one.
