Ben’s Story

Site created on December 13, 2021

Ben was diagnosed with Burkitt's Lymphoma on December 14, 2021.  He continues to fight this terrible disease and has endured debilitating chemotherapy and numerous other treatments.  He is strong and so very brave.  Ben is a kind, caring, and compassionate 17 year old who loves the outdoors, music, and athletics.  This is his journey as he overcomes this disease.  We thank you for your kind words and prayers.

Journal entry by Carly Huebsch

It has been a rough couple of days for Ben.  He is battling a respiratory/stomach bug that seemed to hit him particularly hard on  Friday.  Thankfully, he seems to be feeling better today.  Despite the fact that he is not receiving treatment, he is still considered immunocompromised and will likely remain so for some time.  His body's immune system has to work very hard to fight off any intruding germ. I breathed a huge sigh of relief when I heard Ben ask Aaron if he would play catch this afternoon.  They are attempting to sandwich a throwing session in between the  Brewers and Bucks games today.   Although the rational part of my brain understands that kids get sick and this is normal, it doesn't lessen my fear and worry.  This is especially true when he complains of nausea. I also know he is feeling much better when he informed me in an exasperated tone to please stop asking how he is feeling. It is a habit that I am trying very hard to break.   Ben is looking forward to attending school this week and baseball games, weather permitting.  Prom is also next weekend and I picked up his tuxedo yesterday.  It is an exciting week for sure.  We pray that he continues to improve and is able to participate in all of these "normal" high school activities.  We are all still learning and processing what our "normal" may look like.  Ben has certainly come a long way and we are in awe of his resilience and optimism.    We are all well aware that Ben is truly a miracle. Nevertheless , he is often frustrated by the speed in which his body is adjusting.  Ben was hoping the transition would be quick.   He tires easily and sometimes struggles to focus.   Activities that were easy for him previously are more difficult for him now.  I think it is important that we recognize that even when a cancer patient does not have active disease, they will always battle. May we pray for all of these brave warriors and be blessed with acceptance and grace.  They are all my heroes. I am sharing a picture of Ben from two years ago.  We both needed to see this today as a reminder of his strength and passion to keep fighting. He has indeed come so very far.   Please continue to pray for Ben.    God Bless
