Beckett’s Story

Site created on August 11, 2021

Welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Please continue to send positive vibes to Beckett as he fights this battle. It means so much to our family.

Our family was having the very BEST summer together, until Friday, July 30th. Our oldest son, Beckett (7), woke up a bit paler than usual so we decided to take him to the pediatrician thinking he may be dehydrated or possibly anemic (so thankful for our wonderful neighbors who convinced us to go). The pediatrician did some blood work and seemed pretty concerned, so we were rushed to CHOP. Things escalated very quickly and within a few short hours, Justin and I were walked into a private room by a team full of doctors, telling us that Beckett has cancer cells in his blood. He was admitted to CHOP oncology, and after many more tests, he was officially diagnosed with Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia.
There are not stages of Leukemia, like in other cancers, but there are risk levels. Unfortunately, Beckett's levels put him in the highest risk category.
In just his first week, Beckett received 2 blood transfusions, 2 platelet transfusions, 2 spinal taps, a bone marrow biopsy, a CT scan, and three chemotherapy treatments. We have a very long road ahead of us. As you can imagine, this is a complete nightmare for our family. We are trying our best to process and navigate this new life.
Beckett has a very intense treatment schedule for the next month, then we will know more about what treatments will look like for the remainder of this year. If all goes well, he could be out of this by the end of 2023.
Thank you for all of the love and support we have already received. We are currently scared, angry, and very, very sad.  Please keep our little boy in your thoughts and prayers, and if you can, please consider giving blood... it is saving his life!

Newest Update

Journal entry by Amy campbell

It's been a little bit since we updated everyone.....

Beckett has been Off-Treatment for 3 months now and he is thriving! He is enjoying school, time with friends and family, and no medicine! This week he stopped taking his extra 3-months of Bactrim, so he is officially off all medications.

We were back at clinic this past Wednesday and his counts looked great. His liver enzymes have continued to be high since he ended treatment but they will check that again next month and told us not to worry since his bilirubin numbers are normal. If they continue to be high, he will need to have some imagining done. Beckett's hemoglobin, ANC, and platelets are slowly creeping up. They might take a while but I can remember when they were all at zero (or dangerously low), so the numbers are looking fabulous for now. Beckett's energy levels are great and he hasn't had any leg pain. He continues to do well with his PT and OT consults so no need for regular sessions He has a fine rash all over his face that bothers him (you would really have to look for it to be able to see it) but that is just his body reacting to coming off of chemotherapy and may last months.

Beckett grew one inch this last month which makes him very happy! He is eagerly waiting for his after-treatment growth spurt that the doctors have told us about. Unfortunately, I think Beckett thinks he will grow a foot overnight....we told him to be happy with 1 inch :)

We have a lot to be thankful for! We are so proud of Beckett and happy for his current state of normalcy :)...which is all that he wants!

Wishing you all the best!
