Barb’s Story

Site created on July 10, 2018

Barb was diagnosed with Primary Biliary Cirrhosis (PBC) of the liver in 2009. Over time her liver has gradually been failing. In November of 2017, she went to Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN, for a week-long testing and she was placed on the transplant list.  Although she made the transplant list, we found out her sister Mary was a match for a live donor and surgery is scheduled for July 18th at Mayo Clinic.

Journal entry by Brianna Opitz

Just wanted to give you all an update. Mom hit the one year mark on Tuesday for the surgery. Ironically, she was in Rochester earlier this week for her annual check up. I’m happy to report that everything went well. Her kidneys are holding strong at 40-45% function, the liver numbers are finally consistent and are looking good. We are confident this is her new normal!  What a year, huh?! Thanks again from our family to all of you for your love and support. I am positive this year will be better! :)
