Barbara’s Story

Site created on April 29, 2019

As many of you know, cancer has hit our family hard. This includes my dad Ralph, who died in 2001 after a long journey with leukemia. During that time was Mom's first bout, breast cancer. She was cancer free until November 2017, when she learned she had a tumor in her pancreas. It has since spread to her liver. During this time, she also developed skin cancer on her leg and had that lesion removed. Mom stopped treatment in August, and her oncologist didn't think she would live past Christmas. Clearly she's a fighter! However, that fight is nearly over, and Mom is "ready to go Home. " She and Dad raised us in the church, and for 40 years we have called New Hope Christian Church in Whitestown, Indiana, our church home. However, we know this world is not our forever home; Heaven is (Hebrews 14:12). She has been in a hospice program for 6 months now where she stays home and hospice staff comes regularly to assist. Her preference is to stay in her own home until she goes to her eternal Home, and we are doing our best to honor that. If you wish to visit or help in any way, please see the Ways to Help section and/or contact New Hope. Thank you for being part of this journey!

When do you stop thinking you need to call or go see your mom, forgetting once again for a brief moment that you can't? From what others have said, it seems that never ends. I just miss her so much and have so many things I want to tell her. I even called her phone last night just to hear her voice on her voicemail. The vibrant Mom I knew for 40 years, not the tired-sounding and ill-looking Mom of her last months. I dreamed about her last night, that she was back, like old times. She even seemer younger, in her 40s like me. I miss my first and best friend so much!!!
