Journal entry by Kylie Herman

It’s now been two weeks since we’ve been home and Graham is basically a normal baby. Eat, sleep, poop, and repeat! We have had several appointments since getting home and Graham is gaining weight and thriving! Valentine’s Day was the optimistic goal of discharge but even then, the doctors did not want us to fixate on that either! Our little guy was just so excited to get home he was crushing everyone’s expectations!!

As far as healing goes, His heart is “fixed” per say, however, with Congenital Heart Disease there is no 100% cure! The Doctors say the future of baby Graham is that of a normal boy with regular check ups to the cardiologist to watch for any complications following surgery. Like narrowing of the coronary arteries, stiffening of the pulmonary artery, or any decline in his heart function. Of all the congenital heart defects, Transposition of the Great Arteries is one with great quality of life and minimal further interventions after the initial open heart surgery!

Shane and I are adjusting to the long nights and Shane being back at work, so our apologies to those who have reached out to us and it has taken some time for us to get back! We are also just trying to process the fact that Graham is here and everything we have went through this past month! It was so exciting welcoming a baby into our family yet the uncertainty of all the events after delivery were rather traumatic.

I attached some picture of our time in the hospital, some of the pictures might be hard to look at but just to see how quickly Graham recovered is unbelievable! God’s hands were all over our sweet boy before he even took his first breath, thanks to all of your guy’s unending prayers.

If there is one thing Shane and I have learned during this time it is the power of community, faith, and just how important family is! Shane and I not only had each other to lean on but both of our parents were there with us in Minneapolis from the day he was born until Graham was stable post surgery. Which could not have been more of a blessing!

Now that we are past this huge hurdle we get to watch our little Heart Warrior grow up! We just want to thank each and everyone of you guys who have prayed and sent well wishes our way. We could not have gotten through this without you!

With love,

Shane, Kylie & Graham
