Anne was diagnosed with a liver condition approximately 5 years ago, likely genetic in nature. At the time, her medical team at Mayo Clinic confirmed liver distress, but hoped with time, it could heal. Late in February, 2021, the tide changed. It was determined that the condition of Anne’s liver, as well as the supporting biliary system, has continued to deteriorate to such a degree in recent weeks, that the best course of treatment for Anne is to undergo a complete (rather than partial) liver transplant.
Anne has undergone all necessary tests and consultations with many specialists, labs, etc. to determine her placement on the National Transplant List. Anne’s Transplant Team has indicated her score places her very high on Mayo’s list for surgery, once a compatible liver becomes available. Because a full liver transplant is needed, the liver will come from a deceased donor. Our family is prepared to receive the call at any time indicating that a liver has been secured, signaling the beginning of her transplant journey. As we understand it, Anne will be hospitalized for approximately one week at the time of her surgery, followed by three weeks in Rochester post-surgery to monitor her condition and recovery.
Thank you SO MUCH for prayers for Anne, Bret and our family. While this situation is scary and has evolved faster than we ever expected, we are so GRATEFUL for the incredible team at Mayo, Anne's good health (despite her liver), the prognosis for complete healing/recovery post transplant, and most importantly, the donor and their family who will unselfishly give this life-saving gift.
As a doctor of physical therapy, Anne has spent the last five years working in the hospital, helping others heal and live healthy lives. We know that God has a greater plan, and that this transplant will allow Anne to continue to serve and care for thousands of others throughout her life. Even though Anne does not like a lot of attention and we lovingly joke that her liver is "under maintenance," we hope this page serves a source of hope, prayer and ENCOURAGEMENT! This is a journey, and if there is anyone who can handle this, it's our Annie.

Yesterday, Anne had a great day! She was able to go for a short walk and got moved out of ICU to the transplant floor. She’s reported that she has a beautiful view of Rochester from her new penthouse ☺️. Even though it is still a little difficult to eat (feels full really fast!), she enjoyed a smoothie for breakfast this morning and watching Finding Nemo. “Just keep swimming.....Just keep swimming!”
