Anita’s Story

Site created on December 9, 2020

Three weeks ago our beautiful mama got real weak and we took her to the ER. 6 hours later she got an ambulance ride to Iowa City for tests. Sadly they discovered mom had leukemia. It's hard to pinpoint where it came from but radiation from breast cancer is what led the ER doctor to focus on the possibility of leukemia. Mom went through a week of tests to confirm the leukemia. She has been diagnosed with Acute Myeloid Leukemia. It's an aggressive cancer that will eventually take her from us. But the amazing folks in Iowa City are working hard to kick this crap into remission. Covid kept us from being with her during her time at the hospital which was hard on all of us. Sometimes you just have to hug your mom!! Yesterday, Friday, December 18 we got to pick mom up and bring her home. She is resting now in a new bed in the old farm house she loves. Thank you for all your support for mom. We have much to learn about this new life we are living with her. Mostly that the dogs can't snuggle her after playing in the mud.

Journal entry by Lori Schrodemier

Happy 2021!!! Mom continues to have up days and down days. The chemo caused sores in her mouth that are extremely painful.

Tomorrow mom has a bone marrow biopsy to see if the chemo worked and she is producing the proper white blood cells. She isn't looking forward to another trip to Iowa City but is grateful it isn't in an ambulance this time. Prayers for a positive outcome are appreciated.

We hope Christmas was perfect for everyone of you!!!
