Madeline’s Story

Site created on September 11, 2018

Welcome to our support website, and thank you for all the support that you have already provided us as a community in getting Madeline a new kidney!

Madeline was diagnosed in 2016 with focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) and she needs a kidney transplant urgently because her kidneys are operating at 10%.  A live donor will give her the best prospects for a long healthy life. Unfortunately, we had to go so far as to file a lawsuit against DC Medicaid to get them to revisit their own policy, which they initially said would not cover live transplants. Thanks to our crack legal team at the Children's Law Center, DC Medicaid relented and has agreed to cover all the costs of a live donor transplant for Madeline. After Madeline has received her transplant, we will work to get this policy changed permanently for others as well, with the help of several amazing local organizations and champions.

Defying incredibly long odds, David has been identified as a match and will donate his kidney to Madeline. Surgery is scheduled for October 18!

Once surgeries are done, we will need help with meals and hospital support, and some help holding down the fort at home. Please click on the 'Ways to help' button above to learn more about how you can help.

We are so grateful for all that our community does to support us and AOK, and our dear Madeline. We simply could not do this without you.
