Andy's Story

On Sunday, February 23, 2014 at 9:30am, Andy suffered a 30-second seizure at his home in St Paul.  His fiancée, Stephanie, who is a world-champion neuro ICU nurse, handled the situation perfectly, stabilizing him and bringing him to Fairview University of Minnesota Medical Center in Minneapolis.  Andy underwent a CT scan which revealed an abnormal mass in the right temporal lobe of his brain.  An MRI provided further detail, and it was decided that the mass would need to be investigated via biopsy.  On March 3, 2014, Andy was diagnosed with a Grade III Anaplastic Astrocytoma brain tumor, which is a mouthful and does not lend itself to a cool acronym.  More simply put: with his support crew of beautiful Stephanie, family & friends, a team of uber-talented doctors and insanely awesome medical technology, Andy is devising an aggressive action plan to continue living a long and healthy life.

Today, Andy is enjoying life to its fullest with Stephanie, and his days are constantly brightened by people like you.  He prides himself on staying positive, enjoying the outdoors, and capturing beautiful things through cameras & video/photo editing.

For more information on brain tumors, please refer to this brochure.  There's a lot of stuff on the internet about the subject, but this is truly credible!

Again, thank you for being here for us!  Updates will follow.  Until then, keep on smiling :)

Journal entry by Stephanie Ford

The one year anniversary of Andy's death was a few weeks ago.  The day before, on July 28th, I had the pleasure of speaking at the Upward Bound scholarship ceremony where I met the seven students who will be receiving the money donated from Andy's memorial.  They were so kind and grateful.  Below is the speech I gave in front of a lot of people and yes I was nervous and yes I cried a lot.  I couldn't think of a better way to spend the day than in a place where Andy's memory was so alive.

My husband Andy Ford died one year ago tomorrow. Coincidentally, July was Andy’s favorite month of the year for two reasons. First off, every July he spent a week along the shores of Lake Michigan - snorkeling the nearby shipwreck, rallying on the tennis courts, and participating in epic 4th of July celebrations. Of course, he always capped the week off with an exquisitely edited video documenting the shenanigans to perfectly timed tunes. His other favorite July event was this ceremony. He loved collaborating with all the students to showcase your work through this program. He would not settle for a pre-written script, that was too easy. Each year he stayed up late finding the latest music tracks and researching new ideas to bring to the video. And each year he produced an original screenplay as unique as each one of you are. The pride he had in his heart for you all and what you accomplished brought him to happy tears. He was so proud of the work you and he did together.

Today we honor Andy’s memory by using funds donated at the end of Andy’s life toward your future education. It is our utmost pleasure to continue Andy’s legacy within the TRIO Upward Bound program.

Last week, we spread some of Andy's ashes at a tree at the Ford's cabin in the Upper Peninsula Michigan.  I played one of Andy's favorite songs he used to sing to Addison every single night before bed, The Wolves and the Ravens by Rogue Valley.  Right after a very touching moment, Spotify (a music playing app) decided to play a random song I had never heard of.  I immediately picked up my phone to look at the song to stop it and then noticed the title.  Things Will Get Better by Vian Izak.  It was so perfectly Andy.  In a moment of so much sadness, he was there supporting us and giving us a message.  Things will get better.  Things will be good.
