Journal entry by Brianna Jones

Andrew has had a rough week. Monday he was given his ROP eye exam. They found his eyes have gotten worse from the previous week. They are now Zone 2 Stage 2 Pre+. They are going to do a repeat exam on Monday (8/17) to check his eyes again to make sure they aren’t at stage 3. But the eye doctor is 95% sure Andrew will need laser eye surgery. It’s different from what they do for adults who get it done to not have to wear glasses. It’s more done where they will laser the avascular areas of the eye so that the area will stop growing extra blood vessels. They want to stop it before it gets to stage 3 because at that stage there are an increase in blood vessels to where it starts pulling on the retina and will eventually detach it  if it gets to a stage 4. We are hoping he will only ever have stage 2 and will get the surgery he will need to prevent that. They can do injections into his eyes with medications as well but the doctor thinks he will need the surgery. After Monday Andrew was very annoyed and mad and took him about 48hrs to recover from that. He had an increase in his events (oxygen destats with or without heart rate drops). Since Wednesday night into Thursday morning Andrew was being his old self with his normal self resolved events where he wasn’t needing help from myself or the nurses to get back to where he needed to be. Friday Andrew was given 2 of his 2month old shots and an oral rotavirus vaccine. He was not a fan. He is still having some side effects from the vaccine (needing more oxygen support and increase in events). He is having some throwing up issues during his feeds this morning and had to be put on 5 liters of oxygen rather than 4. We are hoping he will not need to be put back on CPAP and that he will settle out and be able to stay on heated high flow. He is now 15.5 inches and weights 1620g about 3lbs 9oz. Hopefully he will just keep growing and proving us all wrong and showing us how big he has gotten. We are now 39days away from his due date!
