Andrea’s Story

Site created on January 1, 2018

On November 17th, 2017,  I went for a mammogram on both breast to rule out pain I was feeling on the right side of my body from my shoulder and arm. I was called back on November 22nd for a second one  only on my left side.  After the second mammogram, they performed an ultrasound on the left side and found out there was a lump.  I was instructed to have it biopsied and we scheduled it on 28th of November.  On November 30th, I was told by the doctor that I was positive for breast cancer.  We want to use this to document our journey.  Larry and I are in this together and welcome your support.  So welcome to our CaringBridge website. We are using it to keep family and friends updated in one place. We appreciate your support and words of hope and encouragement. Thank you for visiting.

Newest Update

Journal entry by Andrea Nicholson Ward

I was asked if I was going to update my caring bridge because I hadn't in a great long time.  I have just been trying to get by with my new "breast", cysts on ovaries, physical therapy, and such.  I had my new ones put in on May 11 and took two weeks off from work to recover.  I am ending up having to get referred to physical therapy because I was having severe swelling on right arm.  I needed to build strength back up in it.

June being my birthday month I tried to be as "normal" as possible.  I ended up going to a therapist for talking about all that is happened because it just got to be too much.  It has really helped.  I am still going.

I just finished my physical therapy at the end of July and I am continuing to do the exercises at home.  I had my full hysterectomy on July 31.  I took the last three weeks off and rested at home.  I did work from home on my computer.  I am so very blessed to have fellow employees who will bring me my work, so I can stay up to date as best I can.

I followed up with my regular oncologist and because I have had the hysterectomy I was able to change the medicine for the hormone suppression.  This is good because the new medicine is reacting better with my body.  The old one had severe bone pain, swelling, and fatigue.  The new one only has minor problems with this.

That brings me to last week.  I am ending up getting a sinus infection/upper respiratory infection.  Now that I have had good antibiotics I am on the mend.  I am returning to work tomorrow and trying to get some sort of normal in my life or as Larry and I call it our new normal.  I want to thank everyone continue prayers and thoughts. I am not sociable as I usually am this year, but I get to work on my healing, so I can do that next year.  I really have had to learn to say no because I just can't physically/mentally do it.  It has been hard to learn for sure.
