Andrea’s Story

Site created on October 21, 2018

Last March, after a couple months of not feeling well, Andrea was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome and multiple myeloma. In May, she began the first of 6 rounds of mild chemotherapy.  She was handling the treatment well, only needing blood transfusions once a month. In late August, she began feeling more tired and was requiring blood and platelet transfusions weekly. She went to Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa in late September for a second opinion. After a bone marrow biopsy and more blood work, on October 17th, she was informed that the MDS has progressed to leukemia.  Immediately Denise and the girls flew to Florida to be with her. The doctors say that her case is complicated due to the 2 types of cancer she has. On Monday October 22nd, she will be admitted to Moffitt Cancer Center to begin an intensive and difficult chemotherapy treatment. Henry and Denise will stay at a hotel nearby and be at her side throughout the whole process. She will be in the hospital for the next 4 weeks - maybe longer. When she achieves remission, she will then receive a bone marrow transplant in hopes for a cure. She has a long and hard road ahead of her, but she is strong and has a lot of fight in her.
