Amelia’s Story

Site created on November 3, 2019

Amelia Marie Aleshire  made her arrival on 11/2/19 at 4:55pm.  She measured in at 6lbs 4oz and 19.5" long.   A few hours after delivery Amelia went "limp" when she was having skin to skin time with mom.  She was immediately taken to the NICU and has had quite the busy night.  She was placed on CPAP which is a machine to assist with her breathing as it was evident that she could not effectively do that on her own.  Antibiotics were started immediately.  Through the night she had 4 chest xrays and ultrasounds of her head and major organs.  Through the imaging that was done the doctors were able to say that anatomically her organs appear to be healthy and developed.  Some fluid was drained off her belly to help her out and an umbilical line was placed for access which per the nurse can be a common thing.   There were concerns that she had air trapped around her lungs and would require a chest tube but fortunately this was not the case so far.    Because she had a second "episode" of breathing difficulty between 2-3am they increased the support of her CPAP machine and broadened the search for a culprit.  They did a lumbar puncture to test her cerebral spinal fluid for infections or abnormalities.  Blood cultures were sent.  At this point it is believed that she is battling some sort of infection and until the labs indicate a specific infection she will be on multiple antibiotics.   She remains in the NICU at St. Mary's where she can benefit from the extra monitoring and the CPAP machine.

We have set this up because Justin and Tara are so excited to share Amelia with the world and want all who care about them to be updated without being distracted by responding to everyone individually.   At this point they are not taking any visitors as Amelia and mom are both needing rest but do know that the overwhelming support and excitement has not gone unnoticed.

Unfortunately,  we haven't been able to get into the pediatric optometrist (baby eye doctor) since this whole COVID-19 thing 😔
I do have some small concerns about her eyes and the faces she makes when going from laying down to sitting up - as if there's some sort of pressures going on, but staying optimistic.
We have our follow up MRI in May at St. Paul Children's & I really hope we can get into the eye doc prior to be able to check her optical nerve for pressure.

We have been home and staying safe in our little "mini-house" . The dental office I work for closed til April 12th due to everything. I'm not going to lie, I'VE ENJOYED EVERY MINUTE getting these precious moments and memories with my baby while she's still a baby 💖.

Hope you all are taking care of yourselves and your family throughout these times. We look forward to the otherside of this when we can see you out and about to give hugs. 😘

Please be sure to give us your address for a "Save the Date" , thank yous & future christmas cards e.t.c.
