Journal entry by Amanda Smith

TODAY IS 1 YEAR!!!

Today marks the 1 year anniversary of Anna going into cardiac arrest at school.  A year ago today our lives were forever changed, but we still have our baby girl and we will take our new normal any day!  This year has been an extremely tough year and an emotional rollercoaster, but we have so much to be thankful for!  I have spent the past few days looking back on where we were and how far we have come.  We have all witnessed God's miracle with Anna, and we know what the power of prayer can do!  Although we continue to pray for her healing and health, we also have prayers of thanksgiving for the miracles we have already seen.

Anna has continued to make tremendous progress, and many would say that she is "back to normal."  Well...she is definitely back to her "new normal."  She has started her freshman year!  This means that Anna is back to cheering, hanging out with friends, watching Netflix, and being on the river.  She has not missed a beat!  There is not much that she can't do, and she isn't afraid to try things that she might not remember doing before.  Her short term memory is pretty good now, but she still has deficits in her long term memory.  This means that although lots of her childhood memories are gone, we get to spend the rest of her life creating new ones.  It has been fun to get to watch her experience a lot of "first" for the second time.  She has also developed a new sense of humor...she is very witty now and full of sarcasm, but she doesn't always understand when people are being sarcastic to her...which can be quiet humorous.  Like I have said before, she still has some processing delays that are seen mostly in academics, but that is something we can live with!

Thank you to everyone that has been there for us throughout this journey!  We could not have made it through this without each and every one of you!  We have read every card, message, and felt every prayer.  I promised Anna that on the year anniversary I would let everyone know that it is ok to take down the blue ribbons and signs!  Thank you all for continuing to show your support throughout the year! Please continue to keep her in your prayers. We know that this is the first year of a lifelong journey!

So…today we will celebrate her one year anniversary (just not like we originally planned)!

Love,

Amanda
