So, it’s been quite awhile since I put an update on here. The last 2 1/2 months have been...difficult. Alyssa’s GVHD flared again in May which required her going back up on the prednisone. She also ended up in a boot for a stress fracture in her right foot (a result from overuse, I’m sure). The HSV virus came back with a vengeance which meant IV medication for 2 weeks, which in turn meant her picc line had to be reinserted. And to top it all off, she was diagnosed with pneumonia on Friday. At least her COVID test was negative, thank God.
She did get to move into a beautiful brand new apartment in Bowling Green earlier this month. It’s a long (and wonderful) story, but an incredibly kind and generous man offered to let her and Jess live rent-free for a year in a real estate development he is working on. It’s really been the one bright spot in all of this mess over the last 2 months.
Her doctor says, it’s 2 steps forward and 1 step back. I believe Alyssa would argue with that and say 1 step forward, 3 steps back. As her BMT recovery drags on, I can see her getting defeated and it breaks my heart. She’s had the most upbeat attitude since being diagnosed, but I don’t think any of us ever imagined how hard and long this recovery was going to take. Every drug she takes to counteract some kind of issue, then causes its own side effect and the cycle just keeps going. Between her health issues and the isolation caused by COVID, she’s just really had a rough summer.
We head back to Cincinnati on Friday. Fingers crossed that they are able to detect some improvement in everything that she’s been dealing with.
If you get a chance, please reach out to Alyssa and offer some encouragement. She needs it right now.
