Journal entry by Colleen Thorburn —
Al had a bronchoscopy today along with his regularly scheduled physical therapy and a pulmonary function test. During a bronchoscopy Al is mildly sedated and they stick a scope with a little camera on it down his throat into his lungs. Al said that he was aware they were doing it, but they had covered his eyes so he couldn’t see anything. Dr. Abbas said that the lung looked good, but there was a little scabbing around the connections that was causing the blood in his sputum and that this was not unusual. To make sure that this did not get infected, he told me to run over to the pharmacy in the south tower to pick up yet another antibiotic. So while Al was in recovery, I got to explore the underground network of the Shands Hospitals. I did eventually find the pharmacy and picked up the new drug and returned to the north tower an hour and a half later to pick Al up and bring him back to the apartment.
